Baby

6 picks for little ones

I was browsing Etsy the other day gathering some ideas when I ran across this shop – Little Hip Squeaks. They have a great variety of hip and cute clothes and accessories for babies. I mean really cute items, you should check them out. So after looking through the shop I put together a couple other items that go with the Little Hip Squeaks Geometric Blanket.

Operation Shower by Jackie Culmer

The talented Jackie Culmer and I have been instgram friends for a while now. You know that ‘hey, I like pretty much everything you do so I apologize for liking pretty much all of your instgrams’. Well that’s me. So finally meeting Jackie at the Operation Shower event was a total bonus to attending the event.

Jackie is seriously wonderful. Spending just part of a morning with her I saw her kindness, talent, and great attitude. She was one of the photographers on hand to take portraits of the new moms/mothers to be at the event and shoot throughout the event.

I shared a couple of photos from the event here. But they pale in comparison to the great shots Jackie got . . .

Little did Amanda and I know that the tables being decorated would be judged. Whoops :)

We didn’t win the competition, but just being able to help out and be a part of the whole day was wonderful!

Amanda found a globe (similar) and did an awesome job painting it like one of the printables provided to us. She had an old vintage suitcase that was painted red to prop the globe on. We used some of my son, Thomas’, Thomas the Train set to frame the suitcase and globe. We set the table with a white and yellow chevron runner, navy napkins, teal wrapped forks, painted red chargers, and these glasses from Pottery Barn. Each of the ladies sitting at our table got a Zoku Quick Pop Character Tool Kit & a candy filled suitcases from HERE. All the ladies did an incredible job with their table designs. There were some seriously fabulous tables out there. And major thanks to Amanda for inviting me to work with her!

DIY Glitter Play Dough

I am on play dough duty for preschool for the month of April, yay! And that is a real yay. I acutally LOVE making play douhg with Thomas. It is SO much fun.

I previously wrote about my expierience making home made play dough{here}. So, of course, I was more than happy to volunteer.

I ran across this DIY tutorial by The Creative Mama on making glitter play dough and had to share. I would definitely do make this for Thomas’ preschool, but I think that might not be quite fair to him. So I will patiently wait for a time to come when glitter play dough is a necessity. Until then, here is how you can make it.

What you need:

  • 1 C Flour
  • 1 C Water
  • 1/4 C Salt
  • 1 TBSP Vegetable Oil
  • 2 tsp Cream of Tartar
  • Food Coloring (or if you want it to smell yummy, kool-aid)
  • Glitter (the bigger flakes, the better)
  • pot/pan & spatula
  • & an eager little helper :)

Steps:

  1. Add everything to the pot. Doesn’t matter what order.
  2. Stir, stir, stir. until pretty smooth.
  3. You can either make one big batch of the same color, or separate it out before you add the food coloring. I doubled my batch & separated it out into six bowls.
  4. Add food coloring or kool-aid & stir well.
  5. After the food coloring, add glitter. Add a decent amount–some will definitely stick around on little hands, but that’s half the fun, right?!
  6. Your mixture should be pretty runny before you add to your pot.
  7. Heat the pot on MEDIUM & DO NOT STOP STIRRING once you pour in the mixture. This step went extremely fast for me–well under a minute, so stir & don’t let it stick to the bottom! This is a mommy job.
  8. The mixture will get clumpy & start to change colors. This is normal. It will eventually all turn a slightly darker shade of the original mixture. I had the best luck flattening mine into a pancake-ish shape & flipping it over. When you think it’s done, remove from heat. I just scooped mine onto the counter.
  9. After mine cooled a tad, I kneaded it a little to be sure it was done. If it is a little too gooey, just put it back in the pot & cook a little longer.
  10. & VIOLA! Glitter Playdough!

I cannot wait to make this. Maybe for Easter. I think I might be able to get away with it then.

Our New Holiday Tradition

I have been meaning to share this with you all but haven’t quite gotten around to it. But I am now and that is what counts right?

While shopping at a local toy store on Small Business Saturday, I picked up Thomas’s very own Elf on the Shelf. I had heard of Elf on the Shelf before but hadn’t even seen it. Once I saw it in person I was SO excited to get it for Thomas and start a new holiday tradition. So we adopted our elf scout…

First we let Thomas get to know his new Christmas friend by naming her and giving her some of her own traits~

Name: Treepop

What is your Elf’s favorite cookie? Chocolate Peppermint Bark

What is your Elf’s favorite Christmas song? Christmas is here, a song Thomas is learning for his upcoming recital.

What is your Elf’s favorite Christmas present? Legos

What is your Elf’s favorite North Pole activity? Snowball Fights

Who is your Elf’s favorite reindeer? Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

A little bit about The Elf on the Shelf…

“The Elf on the Shelf Tradition”

Have you ever wondered how Santa knows who is naughty and who is nice? The Elf on the Shelf – A Christmas Tradition is the very special tool that helps Santa knows who to put on the Naughty and Nice list. This interactive holiday hide-and-seek tradition is perfect for children and families of all ages.

The tradition begins when Santa sends his scout elves out to Elf Adoption Centers. Waiting for their families to bring them home, these patient elves hibernate until their family reads The Elf on the Shelf, gives their elf a very special name, and registers their adoption online. Once named, each scout elf will receive its Christmas magic and become a part of the family’s Christmas each and every year.

Excellent listeners and even better observers, these scout elves are the eyes and ears of Santa Claus. Although they cannot be touched, or else they may lose their magic, the elf will always listen and relay messages back to Santa. Taking in all the day-to-day activities around the house, no good deed goes unnoticed; these scout elves take their job seriously.

Each night, after the family goes to bed, the scout elf uses his magical Christmas powers to fly back to the North Pole. Once there, the elf will make his or her daily report to Santa and visit with elf friends where they will tell stories about their beloved families, play with the reindeer, and of course, sneak some of Mrs. Claus’ cookies!

Before the family awakes each morning, their special scout elf will fly back to their home from the North Pole. However, since these elves like to play games, don’t expect to find them in the same spot!  While some like to hide in the freezer (probably because it reminds them of the North Pole) and others prefer to sit on the fireplace mantle or hang from the chandelier, these elves love to play hide-and-seek with their families.

On Christmas Eve, the scout elf will listen for Santa’s bell and then fly back to the North Pole until the next season, wishing every girl and each boy a Christmas of peace and a year full of joy.
